Race Committee Duties

All ISC-sanctioned sailing events/races are conducted under the auspices of the ISC Racing Committee.

A "Race Committee" is established for each Club-sanctioned racing day on a voluntary basis by Club members and is composed of the following roles:

  • Principle Race Officer (PRO)* - responsible for determining the type and placement of the course and marks, managing the start sequence for each fleet and conducting the races to make it as fair and competitive as possible with the conditions present at the time of the event. The PRO is also responsible for determining if weather conditions warrant abandoning racing activities.
  • Assistant Race Officer (ARO)* - assists the PRO in the management and conduct of racing
*Any Club member interested in serving as a PRO or ARO must first obtain approval from the ISC Racing Committee. Once approved as a PRO or ARO, that Member can sign up on the ISC website for any available racing dates (see below).
  • Scorer - Checks sailboats in before racing begins and records the finishing place of each competitor
  • Signaler - Raises and lowers signal flags under the direction of the PRO or ARO
  • Safety Boat operators/assistants (for 2 Safety boats) - Set the race course marks and start/finish buoys at the direction of the PRO. Assist in sailboat rescue/recovery in the event a sailboat capsizes.
NOTE: No special training is required to serve as a Recorder, Signaler or Safety Boat assistant and these positions provide any Club member, even Associate Members, an opportunity to get out on the water, enjoy the fresh air and catch some sunshine!
Training is required and will be provided to anyone interested in operating a Safety Boat. Contact the ISC Safety Committee or the ISC Office to schedule a date/time for training.

How to Sign Up For Race Committee Duties

There are two ways to sign up for race committee duty:

  • Use the "Duty Roster" found on the Member Portal which will display all race duties across all racing events in a single view. This is especially useful if you want to sign up for race duties across multiple racing days. Click on the "Volunteer" button to sign up for each role for each event you want to serve.
  • Sign up for race duty for an individual race day through the Calendar. Open any given sailing event on the Calendar where you want to serve and the Race Committee positions for that day's races are posted on that day's calendar entry.

All sailing competitors are asked to volunteer for at least one race duty assignment during the sailing season.

How to Review Race Committee Duty Sign-Up Commitments

  • A member can view their individual race duty by using the "My Duties" web page found on the Member Portal. This view will show you all upcoming race duties you volunteered to serve.
  • To view all race duty sign-ups for all events, use the "Duty Roster" web page on the Member Portal. This view will show you the status of all race duty positions across all dates.
  • View race duty sign-ups for an individual event can also be viewed by opening a given race day's calendar entry.

Each PRO is advised to check the " Duty Roster" (or the appropriate race day calendar entry) in advance of their scheduled race day to verify that the positions for the Race Committee Boat and Safety Boats have been filled.

Once you have signed up for any of these positions, please observe the schedule for your race duty commitments.

How to Cancel a Race Committee Duty Commitment

  1. Submit a request online via the Duty Roster or My Duties web page on the Member Portal or call the ISC Office. Your request will be reviewed and a confirmation of cancelation will be sent to your email address.
  2. It is your responsibility to find a qualified replacement ASAP.
  3. Notify the ISC Racing Committee Chair and the PRO scheduled for that date that you are canceling and who you found as your replacement
