Fleet Captain: Dave Tucker
The MC Scow fleet is currently the most active racing fleet at the Indianapolis Sailing Club (ISC). MCs start racing early in April and finish the season at the end of October. The MC fleet is very competitive locally and nationally. Many of our members travel extensively to compete in regional and national regattas.
The MC fleet also hosts two regional regattas. The Hoosier Daddy Regatta is scheduled for early spring and the Long John Regatta is held at the end of October. MC sailors from surrounding states attend the regattas to enjoy the competition, social activities and our beautiful club.
The MC fleet is also a good place for beginning sailors. Many of our fleet members are involved in the club training programs. We welcome the chance to help both novice and expert sailors. Our membership ranges in age from young sailors to members in their seventies. All degrees of skill and ability can be found sailing the MC. There will be a place for you in our fleet.
The 16-foot MC Scow was first constructed in the 1950s. The MC Scow can be sailed either solo or with an optional crew (depending on wind strength) and has a shallow flat hull with simple and responsive controls. It is a good entry-level boat for young and old. MCs also offer enough speed and excitement to be popular with many advanced sailors. The National MC Scow organization (MCSA – www.mcscow.org) has over 100 fleets across the nation and boasts a membership exceeding 700. MC regattas are held across the country almost every weekend during the spring/summer/fall and the major regattas often draw over 100 competitors.
The ISC MC Scow Fleet is also very active off the water. Impromptu get togethers to tell sailing “tall tales” and more formal club events are common. Members of the MC Fleet are committed to the goals of The Indianapolis Sailing Club to “promote the sport of small boat sailing and sailboat racing”. Our members currently hold position as Commodore, Vice Commodore and ten ISC committee chairs.
Try out an MC scow and join us on the water or at one of our social events.
