Fleet Captain: Don Wilson

The MC Scow has grown into ISC's largest one-design fleet in recent years with almost 20 boats. The MC scow's popularity is due to its simple and responsive controls, strong adherence to its one-design scantlings and the ability to sail either solo or with an optional crew. ISC's MC Scow fleet is the 103rd member fleet in the national MC Scow Sailing Association (MCSA -, which has over 600 members across 110 member fleets and often fields over 100 competitors every year at its national championship regatta.

The MC Scow is different than most of the boats at ISC. The MC Scow can be sailed either solo or with an optional crew and has a shallow flat hull with simple and responsive controls. This only adds to the enjoyment of sailing. The shape of the hull, combined with a large sail plan, makes for a very fast and stable ride. Many people have compared sailing a scow with sailing a catamaran because you are always sailing on one rail or the other.

The ISC MC Scow fleet and the National MC Scow class are both very active! Typically, we start sailing even before the ISC racing season begins and sail most every weekend until the last weekend of ISC racing. In addition to sailing at ISC, there are local, regional and national regattas held in the Midwest and throughout the eastern half of the country almost every weekend. There are sailors at every skill level competing in the MC Scow and you will find many opportunities on-the-water to improve your sailing skills, including vendor and MCSA-sponsored training seminars held each year.

Off the water, the fun does not stop. We enjoy getting together and sharing a beverage or working together at one of the ISC social functions. Come join us and you will find we usually have a spare boat to lend. If you would like to be added to the email list and find out when we are getting together next, please let me know.
